I have also taken all steps in my power to protect the

Bank's interests vis-à-vis the Japanese, and shall, of course

continue to do so.

6. As far as I am aware there has never been a threat

by the Japanese "to seize the Sincere Company's property at

Canton". During and immediately after the fires at Canton,

there was considerable looting of the premises of this com-

pany, in nearly all instances, I understand, by Chinese

looters, but, assisted by my representations, the local agent

of the Bank was enabled by the Japanese authorities to

arrange private patrol of and guards for the premises and to

remove a considerable quantity or stock from the building

to safety. hile the Japanese have showed themselves

interested in the Sincere Company's building, they have

respected the existence of the Bank's mortgage and I have no

reason to suppose that they will not continue to do so.

7. I shall be grateful if Your Excellency will bring

the contents of this telegram to the notice of Sir Vandeleur

Grayburn.
